The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Everyday he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions.
One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with smoke rolling up to the sky. He felt the worst had happened, and everything was lost. He was stunned with disbelief, grief, and anger he cried out, "God! How could you do this to me?"
Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island! It had come to rescue him! "How did you know! I was here?," asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied.
The Moral of This Story: It's easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives.even in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground. It just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God.

Laura, You may not know this but your blog has answered a prayer of 20+ years because I have found my very first friend in the entire world... (your born on October 1, 1964, Johnny Bench loving #5~His actual favorite was Roberto Clemente until the crash~ Mackatewah golfing, swifton primary, roselawn, walnut hills high school graduate, sports fanatic husband of yours, Jay)
I have been searching for him for 20 years. I have tried everything including calling his mom (my dad even sees his sisters from time to time). My name is Jeff Broadnax and Jay and I met when I was 2 and he was 3 and went all the way through school together from walking to kindergarten to sneaking a ride with his dad on his way to KY to teach. We lived right across the street from each other.
I live in NY but if Jay would give me a call or you could give me your number I would love to talk to him.
I wasn't sure it was him at first but then I went to the family photos and saw the William and Mary Riesenberg family in miniature. It was like looking his brothers and sisters all over again.
Your son playing golf made me crack up but when I saw Johnny Bench, I KNEW I had the right guy!
Anyway, it has been 25 years since we have seen each other and I would love catch up with him and fill him in on my life. We have gone down some similar journeys.
My email is JeffBrdnax@aol.com 914-736-6591 home, 914-548-8156 cell.
If anything it was worth it just seeing what he looks like and that he has beautiful kids and a wonderful wife (he looks happy).
You can tell him I play golf now (in fact,I am playing tomorrow) and I too still root for the Reds.
Pete Rose (Gary), Johnny Bench (Jay) and Bobby Tolan (JB)the Big Red Machine!
Take care.. Hope this note has brought you as big of a smile as It has me writing it.
Jeff Broadnax
Jeff,
We have just returned home from the hospital, welcoming addition #9 to our family! YOu can find his birth story on the blog!
Jay is out coaching our son Grant's baseball game, but I will show him your comments when he gets home!
I have heard plenty of "Jeff" stories through our years together, funny that the internet brings us together after all this time!
Laura
